A True Story

I try to volunteer at LeBonheur Children's Hospital on a regular basis. Last night, I had the chance to do so. All volunteers are required to wear blue scrub jackets and name badges and so when I went through the drive-thru at Taco Bell after my shift, I had them on. I placed my order at the speaker and drove around to see that the girl who took my order was maybe 16 or 17 years old. She saw my jacket and name badge and her face lit up with excitement. Here is the conversation that followed:

Taco Bell Girl: (gasp!) Are you a nurse? (why she was so excited about this, I don't know)

Me: No, I just volunteer at LeBonheur sometimes and we have to wear these jackets.

TBG: Ooooh...so are you retired then?

Really? REALLY? RETIRED?!? I mean, sure I'm going to be turning 30 in a month or so, but jeez! Seriously a new all time low. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.

I tried to remain calm as I answered her that, no, I was not retired...I just volunteered in my spare time. And she really was the sweetest girl so it was hard to get mad at her. I asked if she was interested in becoming a nurse and she told me she was thinking about it.

When I got home, I told Greg of what had happened and he tried to make me feel better by saying that she probably just assumed that I was a trophy wife who was able to retire when I got married. HA. Nice effort, Greg.

One of the reasons I decided to train for and run another marathon is for myself. I wanted to give myself that gift for my 30th birthday. Because damn it...even if I look 65, at least I can still run.

In other news...it finally happened this morning. I finally got locked out of my house following a morning run. Greg is usually gone by the time I wrap my run up at 7:00AM. Usually, I take my key so that he can lock up when he goes, but today I forgot to bring it. And so when I returned, I found myself locked out of the house. I called him, but he wasn't able to leave because he teaches a class beginning at 7:30. Lucky for me, my sweet father-in-law was able to hurry over with the spare that they keep. Even still, I was stuck outside for almost an hour, which made me late for work. On the plus side, I was able to get some gardening in while I waited! Of course, if I were a good little runner, I would have done some sprint work while waiting. That's what all of you would have done, right? :)

trophy wife for sure, you're way too young to be retired.

time to get a fake rock and keep a key in there...unless you wanted to be late to work today?!?

I wouldn't even have been so productive as to garden.

Teenagers are crazy! It's like they can't see past 20. I recently had a conversation at a race with a lady who thought I was in her age group. I asked what her age group was and she was in the 45-49. My feelings were hurt. I'm not even 40.
